Synopsis from Goodreads:
Juggling assignments and missing her old life in Britannia Beach, Derian Lafleur’s first year at university has been overwhelming to say the least. A sun-filled, all-expenses-paid, spring break getaway with her best friend, Sophie Sakamoto, is exactly what she needs. Or so she thinks…
Until the last person in the world Derian expected to see shows up at the Acapulco resort, and her already stressful life suddenly becomes a million times more complicated. When the girls’ spring break takes an unexpectedly dangerous turn, they find themselves lost and injured in the Mexican wilderness, and Deri is the only hope they have for getting out alive. If only she can figure out what to do next.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher (via NetGalley) in exchange for an honest review. This in no way alters my opinion of the work.
“I was searching for a needle in a haystack in a foreign country.”
This is the third book in the Britannia Beach series and damn, I wish I read the first two books before I jumped into this! I feel like I missed out on all the delicious history between our protagonist and the “beautiful complication” she runs into during her unexpected holiday. But I’ll remedy that soon.
I feel like I should mention that I went into this story blind. I love YA books but I find that I enjoy the stories a lot more if I go into them with minimal information and zero expectations. And wow. This started off all sweet (and a little bit angsty) just as a YA novel should, but then we have this little paranormal thing that Derian’s got going on, and then we have this unexpected and terrifying “thing” that occurs while she’s on holiday, and yeah… I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. It threw me off in the best way possible.
Derian has visions. That’s right, guys. She’s intuitive and she totally owns it! Derian is always trying to make sense of things by following her instincts, interpreting her dreams, and of course, trusting her visions no matter how farfetched they may seem. This was refreshing to see in the in the usual YA scheme of things.
So here’s what/who you need to know: There’s Derian, her boyfriend (Trevor), her ex-boy/friend (Mason), her friend (Sophia), Sophia’s ex/boyfriend (Doug), and some dudes in bulletproof vests.
Did I mention that this story starts off in Vancouver? How cool is that!? I shouldn’t be surprised that the main characters all live in B.C. considering that the series is titled Britannia Beach, but I still get excited when I read about my hometown in books. The story was that much more real to me because everything was so plausible–like the whole thing was happening in my backyard, haha. Does that make sense? Okay, I’ll stop now.
3.75 stars because I need to know what happens next. And I also need to know what happened before, you know, since I kind of skipped the first two books.
